Start with dated readings for the same vehicle, not a model average. A possible rollback signal is a decrease between comparable recorded readings. An unusually low reading compared with other cars is only a reason to investigate.
Build a timeline you can explain
- Collect inspection records, dated service invoices and the seller's current odometer photo. Match each document to the vehicle identifier.
- Record the date, value, unit and source for each reading. Convert miles and kilometres consistently: one mile is 1.609344 kilometres.
- Put the readings in time order. Check transcription errors, replacement instruments and duplicate tests before treating a decrease as suspicious.
- Mark gaps. A rising series says nothing about what happened before its first record or during a long missing interval.
- Ask for original documents and an explanation of each unresolved discrepancy. An independent inspection can add evidence that an online lookup cannot.
Worked example: compare units before values
This is an illustrative example, not a real vehicle: a reading of 80,000 miles followed by 120,000 kilometres is a decrease after conversion, because 80,000 miles is about 128,748 kilometres. It needs investigation. A later reading of 130,000 kilometres would be higher, but would still not prove a complete or authentic history.
Interpret the result conservatively
- Possible decrease: inspect the original records. A data-entry mistake, instrument change or unit problem can resemble a rollback.
- No decrease among available readings: the supplied comparable sequence rises. Missing periods and earlier manipulation remain possible.
- No readings: there is insufficient evidence for this comparison. Follow the country-specific official route.
